Yellow and blue football at Fr O’Brien Park

Achill Rovers connects a 1986 island foundation with Mayo honours, boys and girls pathways, women’s success and community football at Fr O’Brien Park.

Football on Achill Island

Achill Rovers Football, Drama and Athletic Club brings association football to Achill Island in County Mayo. The club was founded in 1986 after Achill United and Achill Eagles joined together to create a stronger local team.

That island foundation still shapes a club open to players, families and volunteers across the community.

A merger that secured the future

Achill United began in 1974 and Achill Eagles Athletic Drama and Football Club followed in 1979. By 1986 both clubs were finding it difficult to field full sides, so a meeting at the Slievemore Hotel agreed an amalgamation.

Achill Rovers grew from that decision to protect competitive football on the island.

Mayo league champions

Achill Rovers finished as Mayo Association Football League runners up in 1997 and won the league title in 1998. The achievement remains the club’s senior league landmark.

That title gives the island club a proud place in Mayo football history.

It strengthens the bridge between the youth section and adult squads.

A club powered by volunteers

Achill Rovers depends on local committee members, coaches, parents, fundraisers and supporters. On an island, that shared effort matters even more because football opportunities rely on people giving time and practical help.

Volunteering and community support help every age group keep playing.
