Grassroots football grown from Hanover estate

Hanover Harps FC connects Carlow grassroots roots, The Plots facilities, boys and girls football and a pathway from early age groups to senior teams.

Hanover Harps identity

Hanover Harps FC is a Carlow community football club founded in 1994, with a green and white crest that carries the Hanover Harps FC name, Carlow wording, the 19 and 94 date marks and a shield with local sporting symbols. The badge fits a club story built around local players, local volunteers and grassroots football across age groups.

The club began from small local roots in the Hanover estate and grew into a structured football organisation with youth, juvenile, junior, women’s and senior activity. The current identity is practical and community led: give players a place to train, compete, improve and stay connected to Carlow football.

From estate green to league football

The first Hanover game was played on the green in the Hanover estate between Quinnsworth staff and local residents. In 1993 the club was invited into a Carlow and District Football League development league with three other clubs, and a year later membership was confirmed.

The first competitive game came against St Anne’s. Those early years were played on what became the rugby pitch at Carlow IT, before the club moved in 1997 to The Plots. The move gave Hanover a football home and set up the next stage of growth.

The Plots and facility growth

The Plots became central to Hanover’s progress. The club secured a 35 year lease there, and a forty foot container became the original hub. Since then, the club has built a clubhouse, developed two playing surfaces, added floodlights, erected a perimeter fence and secured support for a six a side Astro pitch.

The facility story also includes practical upgrades such as showers, dressing rooms and safer boundaries for players. For families, the practical value is a football base that has kept improving rather than relying only on temporary pitches.

Player pathway across age groups

Hanover’s pathway stretches from early age football into adult squads. It covers little kickers from under 4 to under 7, non competitive football from under 8 to under 11, competitive juveniles from under 12 to under 16, youth squads, junior teams, women’s football and senior teams.

That spread gives a family more than one entry point. A young player can start in an early age group, move through school age football and later see junior, women’s or senior football inside the same club environment.

Boys and girls football activity

Recent Hanover activity includes boys and girls football across multiple school age groups. That activity includes under 13 National Cup progress, under 13 girls football, under 14 girls football and under 15 girls football, alongside collections and trips connected with the Blackpool Cup.

The detail that matters for parents is the range. Hanover is active across boys and girls football, cup football, league football, trips, fundraising and regular training, so the correct coach and age group should be checked before a new player attends.

Milestones and honours

Hanover’s growth has produced clear football landmarks. The senior A side won the Premier Division title in 2018, and the under 15 team became National Cup champions a year later, bringing home the Evans Cup, one of the oldest cups in Irish grassroots football.

Those achievements sit beside the club’s ordinary week to week role: coaching, training, safe facilities, player development and community support. Hanover’s story is strongest when the titles and facilities are read together.

Policies, fees and joining

Hanover publishes a child safeguarding statement, player development and playing time guidance, a club code of conduct and a constitution. Those areas are useful to families because they set expectations before the first session and help parents understand how player welfare and participation are handled.

The fee structure has included separate training bands for under 8 to under 11 and under 12 to under 16, with family combinations also available. A first enquiry should include the player age, school year, previous experience and whether the contact is about training, joining, volunteering or club support.

First enquiry checklist

A first message to Hanover Harps should include the player name, date of birth or school year, home area, previous club if any, football experience, preferred position if relevant and whether the enquiry is for early age football, boys football, girls football, junior football, women’s football, coaching, volunteering or club support.

Before travelling to The Plots, confirm the exact team, coach name, arrival time, footwear, registration step, parking plan and whether the session is on grass or the Astro area. Hanover has a wide age range, so matching the player to the right group is the most useful first step.

Club history

Hanover Harps FC began from a local game on the green in the Hanover estate and entered a Carlow and District Football League development league in 1993 before membership was confirmed in 1994. The club moved to The Plots in 1997, secured a 35 year lease and developed a clubhouse, playing surfaces, floodlights, fencing and an Astro area. Hanover now supports early age football, school age boys and girls teams, youth, junior, women’s and senior football, with milestones including the senior A Premier Division title in 2018 and under 15 National Cup Evans Cup success in 2019.
