Little Island and Leeside Park
Harbour side football with deep roots
Leeside United gives Little Island families a route from academy football to senior, junior and women’s teams at Leeside Park.
The Little Island club
Leeside United is the football club in Little Island, east of Cork city. The shield still carries Leeside AFC and Little Island, which fits the long local naming line rather than a separate Cork club.
The red, yellow and black crest makes the locality plain: the club name sits over a boat, palms and water, tying the football identity to the island and harbour setting around Leeside Park.
From parish games to Leeside
The club traces its story to challenge games around St Lappan’s, Clash and Glounthaune in 1967. The first league team entered the Cork AUL for 1968/69 as Little Island, and the later Little Island Athletic line kept youth and junior football alive after Island Albion faded in 1971.
Leeside AFC grew from that Little Island line. The older names belong to the same local football story; they should not be mixed with namesakes in other counties or with unrelated Leeside names outside Cork.
Leeside Park at Wallingstown
Leeside Park is the club’s home base in Wallingstown, Little Island. For visiting families, the practical pin is Leeside Park, Flaxfort, Wallingstown Industrial Area, Little Island, County Cork, T45 VP40.
The ground is more than a pitch. The community complex history includes a sports and social centre, changing facilities, tennis courts and indoor sport space, and the more recent facilities story includes all weather astro pitches at Leeside Park.
Academy and schoolboy pathway
Leeside now carries a very large underage game for Little Island. By 2024 the club chairman was speaking of more than 900 registered players, two teams at each schoolboy age up to U17, and academy numbers that needed all weather training space.
The 2023/24 U16 group gave that pathway a clear national marker, reaching the SFAI U16 National Cup final while a second U16 Leeside side reached a National Trophy semi final. Those runs are pathway milestones rather than honours.
Girls and women’s football
Leeside is not only a boys’ club. The Little Island set up includes schoolgirls and a senior women’s side, with a 2024 club update noting a women’s league and cup double and a move toward Senior Premier football.
That gives girls a visible end point inside the same club: academy and schoolgirl football at Leeside Park, then senior women’s football for players who want to stay in the Leeside colours.
Senior and junior football
Leeside’s adult men moved from the Cork AUL story into the Munster Senior League era. In 2026 the senior side is in the Beamish Stout Senior First Division calendar, with junior teams also part of the MSL picture.
The older AUL years still count. They explain why the President’s Cup, County Cup, AOH Cup and old league wins are central to how local football people remember Leeside.
Selected honours
Selected Leeside honours are set out by season, team and competition. Cup runs and finals are kept as milestones unless a trophy is named.
Community, visitors and joining
Leeside Park is a busy family football place, not just a senior pitch. School use, academy sessions, women’s football, junior teams and visiting teams all share the Little Island setting, so visitors should read the fixture note before travelling.
Parents can start with the club website, then use the contact route shared by the team or coach for registration, safeguarding and new player questions.
