Lotamore football with a 1971 story

Mayfield United AFC brings academy, schoolboy and schoolgirl teams, senior football and over 35s together at its Lotamore home.

From Iona Green to a Cork club

Mayfield United AFC began in 1971 at Iona Green, in a part of Cork where local soccer had been gathering pace through the late 1960s. Ernest O’Mahony, Joe Kennedy, Tadhg O’Neill, Coleman Casey, Richard Keating and Pat O’Connell are named among the founding group.

The first kit came second hand from Casement Celtic for 15 pounds, and the new club was accepted into the Cork Schoolboys League in December 1971. A friendly against Casement Celtic at Ballyphehane and an early competitive game against Wolfe Tone at Wolfe Tone Park sit at the start of the Mayfield story.

Lotamore and first visits

The club had a long road before Lotamore. Spring Lane, Iona Park, Mayfield Heights, Church Road, Blackrock, Mahon, Glenthorn Heights and Dublin Hill all appear in its ground story, with some serving juvenile football and others keeping junior football going.

Lotamore changed the shape of the club. In 1987 Cork Corporation granted permission for the club to develop 6.5 acres, with pitches, dressing rooms, a clubhouse, an all-weather pitch, a stand and gym space in the plan. George Best turned the first sod in December 1987, Roy Keane laid the first brick of the clubhouse, and the all-weather soccer pitch was opened in March 2006.

Academy, boys and girls football

Mayfield’s academy invites local children aged 5 to 10 into a coached soccer setting at Mayfield United Park. The club describes the academy as a safe place for young players to learn skills, enjoy football and settle into the club.

The schoolboys information names teams for boys and girls across the age categories, with an academy in place beneath them. For parents, that makes Mayfield more than a single team contact: it is a Cork club with a route from first football into older underage groups.

Adult football and the senior pathway

Mayfield United’s adult teams compete in the Munster Senior League, with a junior men’s team and an over 35s team also named by the club. That gives older players a way to remain in Mayfield colours after youth football.

The club is clear about the link between youth football and first teams. It says players have come through the youth sides into the first teams and on to national level football, which gives young players in the academy and schoolboy groups a visible route to aim for.

Colours, badge and Mayfield identity

The badge is unmistakably local: a green shield, black ribbons, two white towers, a football, a blue Cork panel, the 1971 date, a gold star and the motto NOBLESSE OBLIGE. It carries the Cork place name plainly rather than hiding behind initials.

Those details match the club’s Cork identity and its Lotamore home. The green, black, blue, white and yellow give the header a strong Mayfield look while keeping the club mark clear at small display sizes.

Mayfield’s club honours stretch across schoolboy, youth, junior and Munster Senior League football. These clear entries keep the season, team and competition together.

Joining, contact and player care

The club’s contact route is straightforward: use the official club site for committee contacts, the club email, academy information and membership steps. The contact list includes dedicated roles for schoolboy football and all-weather bookings, so parents and visiting teams can start with the right person.

Mayfield also publishes child welfare information, including a Child Safeguarding Statement and a risk assessment. For a parent bringing a young player into the club, that sits beside the academy and schoolboy details as part of the first check.
