McDonagh Park football with national pedigree

Founded in 1968, Newmarket Celtic connects Clare schoolboy, youth, ladies and adult football with one of the strongest honours lists in the county game.

Newmarket Celtic identity

Newmarket Celtic F.C. is based in Newmarket on Fergus, County Clare, with its football home at McDonagh Park. The crest carries the red and white Celtic swirl, a green centre, the motto Victoria Cum Honore and the 1968 foundation date.

The senior men have been a central force in the Clare District Soccer League, while the wider club setting includes academy, boys, girls, youths, under 19, ladies and second team football.

The 1968 beginning

The club began in 1968 and has grown from a village football side into a club with county, provincial and national titles. Tom McNamara is central to the foundation story and to the early identity of Newmarket Celtic.

That long life matters for families because the club now offers a pathway from early age groups through youth and adult football without losing its Newmarket on Fergus base.

Visiting McDonagh Park

McDonagh Park sits on the Ennis Road in Newmarket on Fergus, with the V95 EK60 Eircode used for match visits. Visiting teams should confirm the assigned pitch, arrival time and parking details before travelling.

The ground is the practical centre for home games, training activity and club gatherings, so this is the first point to check when planning a first visit.

Pathway from academy to adults

The club pathway includes academy football, boys teams, girls teams, youths, under 19 football, ladies football and adult men. Recent activity has included boys under 13, under 14 and under 16 football, with girls under 13 and under 16 teams also active.

Parents should use the player age, school year and playing experience when making a first enquiry, then check which group has space and which venue applies that week.

Girls and ladies football

Newmarket Celtic Ladies FC gives the club a clear female football identity alongside the boys and men. The girls pathway has included under 13 and under 16 teams, while the adult ladies route gives older players a local place to continue.

Families should confirm the current age group, training night and registration steps before attending, because girls and ladies football can change quickly from season to season.

Youth and under 19 route

The youth route has produced a deep run of honours, including FAI Area Cup wins, Munster Area Cup wins and Clare youth titles. That tradition gives teenage players a bridge between schoolboy football and senior adult teams.

The under 19 section also has its own honours trail, with League Cup, Challenge Cup and league success showing that the older teenage pathway has carried competitive weight.

B team and second adult route

The B team gives developing adult players and returning players a route into regular football. Newmarket Celtic’s second adult strand has won first, second and third division honours, along with shield and league cup trophies.

That depth matters because it gives the senior group more than one entry point, rather than making every adult player depend on the main senior side.

FAI Junior Cup champions

Newmarket Celtic won the FAI Junior Cup in the 2022/2023 season, beating St Michael’s in the final at Jackman Park after a penalty shootout. That success made the club the first Clare winner of the national junior title.

The final followed a run through regional and national opposition and remains the club’s headline national achievement.

A four trophy senior season

The 2022/2023 campaign became a landmark season for the senior men. Newmarket Celtic lifted the FAI Junior Cup, the Clare Premier Division after a play off, the Tom Hand Memorial Cup and the President’s Junior Cup.

The club also represented Clare in FAI Cup football, bringing Newmarket into a wider national senior cup setting while keeping the Clare league as the weekly base.

Clare Premier Division roll

The senior honours list includes Clare Premier Division titles across six decades, from the late 1960s through the 2020s. It is one of the strongest local league runs in Clare junior football.
