Foxford · County Mayo · United in 1989
One club for two communities
Straide & Foxford United brings youth and adult football together at Green Road in Foxford.
The beginning
How Straide and Foxford became United
A detailed thirtieth anniversary history records that Straide United, founded in 1979, and Foxford FC, founded in 1974, chose to amalgamate in the early summer of 1988. Straide had a useful junior team but limited resources, while Foxford had a declining adult side and a promising schoolboy and youth structure.
The new club was formed in 1989 as Straide & Foxford United AFC. Its crest still carries the phrase “United in 1989”, and the union created a football home serving Straide village, Foxford town and the surrounding rural communities.
The adult side finished second in its first season. At youth level, the first under 13 boys won all ten league matches in 1989/90, establishing development as part of the club’s identity from the beginning.
A notable senior era
From Mayo champions to Connacht champions
Straide & Foxford won consecutive Mayo Premiership titles in 1992/93 and 1993/94. The club then stepped into the Connacht Senior League and won the 1994/95 championship at the first attempt, defeating Castlebar Celtic 1–0 in the title play-off. It finished runner-up in each of the following two league seasons.
The first team returned to the top of Mayo football as Super League champion in 2000, while the second team won its divisional cup. After the club’s first relegation from the Super League in 2007, the response was immediate: the anniversary history records an unbeaten 2008 league campaign, a divisional cup and the Mayo cup.

Boys and girls
A pathway with deep local roots
The girls’ section began in 1995/96 with 15 registered players, and its under 14 side won the league in that first season. The club’s 2019 anniversary account described football from under 6 to under 17 at that time; current Mayo Youth Soccer fixtures confirm active boys’ and girls’ teams across several age groups in 2026.
Goalkeeper Amber Hardy names Straide & Foxford as her first club before progressing through Sligo Rovers and Athlone Town to Treaty United. It is a current example of the pathway that the club has worked to provide for decades.

Joining and contact
Make the first enquiry useful
The official Straide & Foxford United Facebook page is the clearest public channel for weekly results, fixtures and club notices. A parent or guardian should include the player’s name, year of birth and previous experience when asking about a youth place.
Confirm the current squad, training time, surface, registration, fees, footwear and collection arrangements before attending. Adult players should state their recent playing level and the team they hope to join. The Mayo Youth Soccer club profile is useful for scheduled youth activity, but direct confirmation from the coach remains final.
