Football for Swinford’s next generation
Swinford Football Club brings boys, girls, men and women into the game at James McEvaddy Park. Its story combines decades of community effort with youth football and adult competition across Mayo.

The club’s story
From borrowed pitches to a home of its own
Swinford’s archived club history traces local football to the 1930s and 1940s, an early club in the 1950s and a formation meeting in 1962. It dates the present club to a 1974 meeting in the old Town Hall, with Pearse Holmes as chairman and Donal Benson as honorary secretary.
The team used Brabazon Park and later the Vocational School pitch. Margaret McEvaddy’s lease of land at Cloonaghboy in 1986 made a permanent home possible. Kevin Moran opened the development on 13 July 1991; James McEvaddy Park was named after her late husband.
Further work brought improved drainage, changing rooms, parking, a floodlit training area and spectator seating. Those developments explain why the ground matters to the club: it was built through local support, fundraising and grants.
Young players
Boys’ and girls’ football
Swinford has youth teams for boys and girls alongside its adult teams. The club’s kit supplier describes these pathways, while the Mayo Youths club profile is the relevant league starting point for underage football.
For a new player, contact the club with their year of birth and previous football experience. Ask which team is taking players, whether a first visit can be arranged, and what registration and equipment are needed. Training times, available places and fees should be confirmed directly rather than assumed from an older notice.
Bring shin guards and water, and ask the coach which boots suit the scheduled surface. Parents should also confirm the drop-off and collection arrangements and who to contact if a child cannot attend.

Joining and staying in touch
Contact Swinford Football Club
Use the club’s Facebook page for announcements, or email swinfordfootballclub@gmail.com, the address published in the council’s sports directory. For young players, a parent or guardian should make the first enquiry.
Ask about team places, membership costs, training, club safeguarding contacts and any volunteering opportunities. Confirm the required kit with the team before ordering from the Swinford club shop.
The team and match panels elsewhere on this page show records connected to Irish Youth Football. They may not cover every Swinford side; the club and relevant league remain the contacts for a particular team’s arrangements.
