Roots in Kilternan

Wayside Celtic Football Club was established in 1948 by men from the Kilternan area. The official club history traces the early years to Stepaside, followed by a long spell at Golden Ball in Kilternan and the later move to Jackson Park. The club remains fully amateur and ties its identity closely to the local community.

The crest carries the tower of the Ballycorus lead mines, a landmark visible from the club grounds. Billy Kelly designed the original badge and its modern form keeps the same local symbol. For the fiftieth anniversary in 1998, Joe Walsh, Paddy Farrelly, Bob McCarthy and Ger Doyle sourced and restored the gold fleck balls that had disappeared from the Old Abbey Gate pillars beside the Golden Ball pub.

Academy, youth and senior teams

Wayside welcomes boys and girls aged four to six into its academy, then offers structured underage football through the DDSL and an adult route into the Leinster Senior League. The club says it fields more than twenty junior teams and three senior teams. Its official team page lists youth groups by birth year from 2009 through 2019 and publishes coach contacts, plus Senior Sunday, Saturday Major and Premier Sunday sides.

Irish Youth Football currently connects four 2026/27 records to Wayside Celtic: boys at under 9, under 15, under 17 and under 18. Those cards appear below this profile. They are only the teams held in the live directory, not the club’s full academy, DDSL or senior registration. Girls, younger and intermediate youth groups, and the adult sides are not fully represented in the current relationship list.

Honours

The club’s published roll records its first AUL Division 3 South title in 1953 and the Wicklow League title in 1959. Further AUL titles followed in Division 3 in 1978, Division 2 in 1980, Division 1 Saturday in 1985 and Division 1 Sunday in 1987. Wayside won the Leinster Junior Cup in 1989.

Wayside lists five Leinster Senior League Senior Division championships, won in 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2011. The record also includes Division 1A in 1990, Division 1 in 1991 and Major 1 Saturday titles in 1996 and 2004.

National cup success includes three FAI Intermediate Cups, won in 1996, 2001 and 2005. The club also records Metropolitan Cups in 2008 and 2012, Dublin Bus Charlie Cahill Cups in 1996, 1998 and 1999, and Noel Ryan Cups in 2010 and 2011. Wayside won the 1999 Leinster Senior Cup final against Athlone Town and reached the 2012/13 semi final after victories over Drogheda United and Bray Wanderers.

FAI Cup record and representative players

The official history records wins over Waterford, Finn Harps, Cobh Ramblers and Bray Wanderers in competition with League of Ireland clubs, alongside fixtures against Bohemians, St Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers. The first team reached the second round of the FAI Cup in both 2024 and 2025. A Senior Development side won a league title and earned consecutive promotions from 2023.

Since 2000, eleven Wayside players have represented the Republic of Ireland at amateur level: George Webb, Alan McHugh, David Gill, Damien O’Neill, Les Flynn, Paddy Kavanagh, Wayne Callaghan, Ian Callaghan, John O’Neill, David Sullivan and Ray Whelehan.

Jackson Park and club facilities

Jackson Park is on Glenamuck Road South, Kilternan, Dublin 18, D18 RC03. The club contact page gives that address and names a clubhouse manager. The official site’s aerial ground photograph shows adjacent grass and artificial playing areas. Its Jackson Park pitch information confirms a main pitch with pitchside advertising positions.

The clubhouse is also used for community activity, including table tennis and fitness classes. Public club pages do not promise that changing rooms, toilets, refreshments or indoor rooms are open for every youth fixture. They do not publish a permanent spectator parking plan or a full step free route. Visitors with access needs should contact the club before travelling.

Badge and colours

The badge shown here comes from the official Wayside Celtic website and carries the Ballycorus tower, football and Golden Ball name. The site has a strong green and white visual identity, but the club text checked for this profile does not give a stable written declaration of both current home and away kits. The structured colour fields remain blank until a club or league source publishes exact kit wording.

Safeguarding and volunteering

Wayside publishes club rules, a player code of conduct, child safeguarding material, a coaches handbook and a juvenile coaching handbook on its official policies page. The club welcomes volunteer coaches, administrators and match day helpers. Parents should use the named Child Welfare Officer on the contact page for safeguarding enquiries.

Record notes

No official club video suitable for viewing within this page was found. Current kit wording, a complete 2026/27 registration list, fixed visitor parking arrangements and full accessibility details were not confirmed in stable club text. These points have been left open so the profile does not turn visual clues or old listings into unsupported facts.
