The Claddagh, Galway City
West United FC
Green and white football from academy to adult level since 1945
West United FC is a Galway city club rooted in the Claddagh and based at South Park. Founded in 1945, West runs senior men’s and women’s football alongside an academy and youth pathway. The club is known for green and white hoops.
Founding story
A historical club page names Colie McDonagh, Michael Byrne, Matt Glynn, Tim Keane and Charlie Devlin as the founders in 1945. It also records green and white hoops as the colours chosen at the start.
West first used West Park in Renmore for home games. The modern club lists South Park in the Claddagh as its base, and current Galway Football Association fixtures place West home teams there. The move from the original ground to the present base is part of the club’s wider history, but a dated public account of every ground change was not found.
Teams and academy
The official club website presents first team men and first team women, followed by under 19, under 18, under 16, under 14 and under 11 groups and the wider academy. Current club posts show academy training and player recognition across several younger age bands.
IYF connects live West United team cards below this profile, including boys and girls entries from Galway competitions. Those cards show the competition records currently held on the site. They do not form a complete registration list, so parents should still check the club’s latest intake notice.
The academy was relaunched in 2018 after a gap in underage coverage. The rebuild has since produced a broad set of youth teams and recent league and cup wins. A complete training timetable, fee table and named coaching list were not published on one open page when this profile was checked.
Honours
The official roll of honour records success across senior, reserve, youth and masters football. Senior highlights include the Connacht Junior Cup in 1982 and 2009, Galway Premier League titles in 1987, 1993 and 2009, the Connacht Senior Cup in 1994, and cup wins in the Schweppes Junior Cup, Joe Ryan Cup and Jack Lillis Cup.
- Connacht Junior Cup: 1982 and 2009
- Galway Premier League: 1987, 1993 and 2009
- Connacht Senior Cup: 1994
- Joe Ryan Cup: 1993, 2012 and 2018
- Galway reserve league wins across 1997 to 2022
- Recent youth league and cup wins from under 11 to under 21
The same record includes 2023 girls under 12 league and cup success and a cluster of academy honours in 2024 and 2025. The official page should be used for the complete year by year list and competition titles.
Players who carried West beyond Galway
The club’s legends page tells the stories of Eamonn Deacy and Tommy Keane. Deacy began at West under Michael O’Connor, later won the English league and European Cup with Aston Villa, and earned four senior Republic of Ireland caps. Galway’s Terryland Park was renamed Eamonn Deacy Park after his death.
Keane moved from West to Bournemouth, returned to play in Ireland and became an FAI Cup winner with Galway United in 1991. West remembers him through the Tommy Keane Memorial Tournament. Their stories show the connection between local football in the Claddagh and the professional game.
South Park and visitor information
South Park is a Galway City Council recreation ground shared across sports. The council lists two soccer pitches, one Gaelic games pitch, one rugby pitch and changing or shower facilities. West United’s home use is well supported by current fixtures, but the relationship does not indicate private ownership.
The ground sits in the Claddagh beside the waterfront and close to Galway city centre. Public records checked for this build do not confirm a dedicated match day car park, fixed spectator seating or refreshments. Use the fixture notice to confirm the exact pitch and arrival time.

Joining and official updates
Membership and intake notices are published through the official website and the club’s social channels. Contact routes available to the public are Facebook, Instagram and X. A verified public email and telephone number were not shown on the open contact page.
Parents should give the player’s year of birth and ask for the correct academy or team contact, training time, registration route and kit requirements. Adult players can ask separately for men’s or women’s first team and reserve opportunities.
No suitable official club or facilities film was found. Match uploads from outside channels are not embedded.
