Underage football in Wicklow
A county connected by football
Local clubs give girls and boys a place to learn the game, compete and enjoy football across Wicklow.
The association
A long schoolboy football tradition
Wicklow District Schoolboys/Girls League organises underage football across the county. Its roots reach back through generations of local clubs: Wicklow Town AFC’s published history records an under-17 Wicklow Schoolboys League formed in 1966.
Today’s WDSL website brings club information, competitions, fixtures and results together. The county’s youth football identity is reflected in its crest, with a round tower, wooded hills, water and a football beneath the league initials. This page focuses on the schoolboys’ and girls’ game.
Youth competitions
Age groups, divisions and club teams
The official competition directory includes younger groups at under-8, under-9, under-10 and under-11, followed by older-age Premier and divisional football through under-16. Cup competitions sit alongside the league programme, with separate names and groupings for each competition.
Some clubs field several sides in one age group, distinguished by letters or colours. Match the full team name and competition when following a fixture. Confirm the kick-off and ground with the club before travelling, particularly where the published listing still shows a time or venue awaiting confirmation.
Girls’ football
Development leagues across the county
WDSL lists girls’ development leagues at under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16. Its September 2026 schedule includes girls’ teams from communities such as Arklow, Ashford, Aughrim, Carnew, Coolboy, Newcastle, Newtown, Roundwood and Wicklow town.
Families interested in joining should contact their local club about the available age group, training arrangements and registration. The official club directory offers club profiles and contacts, while the league’s fixtures page identifies the competition and match location. Check availability with the club before arranging a first visit.
Season information
Practical resources for clubs and families
WDSL publishes 2026 competition rules, a constitution, match cards and team sheets. Its document collection also includes 2026 five-a-side and seven-a-side material, plus information for larger game formats as players progress through the age groups.
Use the date on each document when checking which edition applies. The official contact page provides a league enquiry form; individual team questions are best directed to the club. Follow WDSL’s own season labels when reading competition information.
