Club story

From the Convent Grounds to a larger community base

Athboy Celtic was founded in 1982 under chairman Eamon Mahon at the Convent Grounds on Kildalkey Road. The club’s official history says the single senior team entered Division 2, won the league in its first season and earned promotion. More than £9,000 was spent draining, levelling and developing the original field.

An U14 side soon joined the North Eastern Counties School Boys League. In 1990 the schoolboy side began a sustained expansion, building teams from U10 to U16. The club history records national-cup football and trips to tournaments in Holland, France and the United Kingdom as that youth structure developed.

The club marked its twenty-first year in 2003 with a gala dinner attended by former Republic of Ireland manager Jack Charlton. Its physical growth accelerated a decade later. In 2014 Athboy Celtic joined the project at the Cowpark, took possession of two six-a-side all-weather pitches in 2018 and officially opened full-size grass pitches at Athboy Community Park in July 2019.

Girls’ football began in 2018 with U8 and U10 sides. The history says new girls’ teams followed, and new changing rooms opened in June 2022 with former Athboy youth player and Republic of Ireland international Jamie McGrath performing the opening. A report from the fortieth-anniversary weekend recorded two all-weather pitches, a main grass pitch and 26 teams at that time.

The current club home page now says Athboy Celtic has more than 30 teams in the North Eastern Football League and North Eastern Regional League. The history’s 2022 snapshot counted more than 260 juvenile and 40 senior players, including four girls’ teams and mini-kickers.

Irish Youth Football currently connects 39 boys-coded records for 2026–27. Eight are U12, thirteen U13, five U14 and five U16; eight have no age label. There is no linked U15, and the mini-kickers, younger boys, U17, girls and senior teams described by the club are missing. This is substantial but incomplete team coverage.

The automatic team panel currently shows the first 30 records. The remaining nine relationships are available directly as an additional U13 entry, an age-unlabelled entry, an additional U14 entry, an additional U16 entry, a U12 entry, a second age-unlabelled entry, another U12 entry, another U13 entry and the final held U13 record. This restores access to every relationship without pretending the duplicate-looking entries are distinct named squads.

The IYF fixture view has no upcoming match at present. Its results view returns 50 saved results and reports more beyond the first batch. The NERL club page lists both Convent Grounds and Athboy Celtic Community Grounds and shows competition for boys and girls in 2026.

The club’s first Division 2 title in 1982–83 is part of its official history. More recent verified examples include the women’s 2025 Premier Shield win, a 4–2 final victory over Cootehill Harps, and the U10 Colm Cooper Cup win over Trim Celtic in September 2025. These examples are not presented as the club’s complete honours roll.

The club news archive also records its FAI One Star Club Mark in 2024. Adult-league history is supported by the NEFL roll of honour, which lists Athboy Celtic as Division 2 winners in 2014–15. Team and club honours remain labelled separately.

Kit information is unusually clear. The current NERL profile gives a black-and-amber home jersey with black shorts and socks. The away jersey is amber and black, again with black shorts and socks. The same league source supplies the crest displayed on the IYF team cards.

Visitors need to distinguish between two sites. The Convent Grounds remain on the league list and current match records place them near Kildalkey Road. Athboy Community Park at the Cowpark contains the newer grass, all-weather and changing facilities. The official contact page provides the club contact route, but it does not assign every team to one ground.

The facility history confirms changing rooms and pitches, not the opening of toilets, refreshments or every room for every fixture. A permanent spectator parking plan and detailed step-free route were not found. Check the current team message for the correct venue, entrance, pitch, parking and available facilities before setting out.
