Douglas Hall AFC at Moneygourney

Douglas Hall AFC brings a 1971 Cork football story into Moneygourney, with academy, school age, youth, women, junior, senior and over 35 routes.

Douglas Hall AFC in Douglas

Douglas Hall AFC is a yellow and navy Cork football club based at Moneygourney in Douglas. The club serves Douglas, Grange, Donnybrook, Rochestown, Garryduff and the wider south Cork football community.

The crest brings the club name, the 1971 foundation year, two footballs, a tower, a ship and water into one Douglas identity. The colours, ground and pathway make Douglas Hall distinct within Cork football.

Founded from St Columbus Hall

The club was founded in 1971 by a group of young lads based in St Columbus Hall. During the summers they played friendly matches against students in the Seminary on Rochestown Road, before entering the Cork AUL later that year.

That origin gives the club a local community start rather than a top down senior identity. The first trophy was the Cork AUL Division 2 title in 1974, and schoolboy football followed soon after.

Moneygourney and club land

Douglas Hall was one of the first Cork clubs to purchase land to develop pitches, moving to Moneygourney in 1980. The club members bought 11 acres and then built the football base that still anchors the club.

That decision shaped everything after it: schoolboy football, girls teams, adult teams, academy sessions, coach education, parking and community events could all grow around a home of their own.

Playing and training facilities

At Moneygourney, the club has one full size grass pitch, one full size floodlit astro pitch, one floodlit seven a side grass training area and two floodlit six a side astros known as the cages.

The facilities also include dressing rooms, two meeting rooms or offices used for coach education and team meetings, and a large car park. Pitch rental is handled through the club contact route on 086 2296535.

  • Main grass: one full size grass pitch for matches and club activity.
  • Astro: one full size floodlit astro pitch plus two floodlit six a side cage astros.
  • Training: one floodlit seven a side grass training area.
  • Support rooms: dressing rooms, meeting rooms and coach education space.

Academy and first steps

The academy is a major part of Douglas Hall. The FAI Club Mark material describes an academy with more than 350 members, while the club’s own facility information places academy activity on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

That early route is supported by boys and girls academy teams. The team structure names boys groups from under 6 through under 10 and girls academy groups from under 6 through under 10.

Schoolboys and youth route

The boys pathway runs from academy football into Cork Schoolboys League teams and then Cork Youth League teams. Current connected teams on Irish Youth Football include under 10, under 11, under 12, under 13, under 14, under 15 and under 16 squads, with A, B and C teams in several age groups.

The club’s own team structure extends that pathway into under 17, under 18 and under 19 youth football. That gives players a route from small sided football into older youth teams before adult football.

Girls and women at the Hall

The ladies section was formed in 1997. The first schoolgirls title came in 2007, when Douglas Hall won the Cork Womens and Schoolgirls Soccer League under 12 league title.

The current team structure includes girls academy groups, under 11 to under 19 female teams, senior ladies and multiple division levels. The women’s team won the FAI Intermediate Cup in 2013, giving the female pathway a national senior achievement within the club story.

Senior, junior and over 35 football

Douglas Hall has senior men in the Munster Senior League First Division, junior men in the Munster Junior League, and over 35 football through the Munster Senior League Floodlit League.

The adult route has long been built from the club’s own schoolboy section. The club notes that many senior and junior players came through Douglas Hall ranks before moving into adult squads.

FAI Club Mark and standards

Douglas Hall completed the FAI Club Mark as part of its wider club development. Club Mark recognition connects the football pathway to governance, volunteer work, community growth and safer club structures.

The club also publishes codes of conduct for coaches, parents and players, alongside diversity, health and safety, social media, inclusion and child welfare policies. Those structures matter for a club with about 900 members and many teams.

Munster cup distinction

Douglas Hall is a rare Cork club with major Munster honours across senior, junior and youth football. The club is named as the only club to have won all three Munster Football Association cup competitions.

That record connects different generations of the club: juniors first, then seniors, then youth teams. It also shows the value of building a pathway that can compete at several levels.

National and representative pathway

Douglas Hall players have moved into senior international, professional and League of Ireland pathways. Colin Doyle came through the ranks and was capped at senior international level.

Clare Shine and Saoirse Noonan played their underage football with Douglas Hall and went on to wear the green jersey. Conor Hourihane also spent time with the Hall before moving to Sunderland.

Volunteers and club community

The club has grown from friendly summer games to a large volunteer led football organisation. The FAI Club Mark account names Brian Kennedy, Michael O Brien, founder CJ Harrington, Gerry O Connell, Bertie O Mahony, Tim Desmond and club president Denis Carroll among those who shaped the club.

That volunteer story is practical. A club with adult, youth, schoolboy, schoolgirl and academy teams needs people arranging teams, transport, coaching, fundraising, facilities and match day support every week.
