A 1926 Offaly football club

Edenderry Town AFC links the Paddy Maloney legacy, Derrycorus, senior football and a pathway from academy age into adult teams.

Edenderry Town identity

Edenderry Town AFC is an Edenderry, County Offaly football club founded in 1926. The crest carries the 1926 year, a tree, a castle, black and white stripes, a red lion and the Fortuna Fortes Adjuvat motto, giving the club a clear red, black and white identity.

The club now connects senior football, youth football, schoolboy and schoolgirl football, academy football and community activity from its Derrycorus base. The current membership and team structure gives families a route from early football into adult teams.

Aylsbury Timber roots and Paddy Maloney

The club was formed in 1926 by workers from Aylsbury’s Timber factory. Paddy Maloney became one of the central figures in keeping soccer alive in Edenderry through difficult early decades, with support from committed local football people.

For many of those early years the club had no settled pitch and at times entered cup football rather than regular league football. That long struggle is why the later development of Fr Paul Park and Paddy Maloney Park sits at the centre of the club story.

From scattered pitches to a permanent home

During the 1960s, Edenderry Town played at places such as Pollards Field, The Creamery and Fay’s Field. The 1971 committee brought a new push, appointed Tony Maher as player manager and saw the club win its first trophy, the Leinster Counties Cup, in 1972.

In 1973 the club secured a long term lease on the old rugby grounds in Derrycorus. After 47 years, Edenderry Town finally had a home at Fr Paul Park, later associated with the wider Paddy Maloney Park complex in honour of a lifelong club servant.

Leinster Senior League and senior pathway

Edenderry Town moved into the Leinster Senior League in 1986. The first team continues to operate in that senior football setting, with second and third teams also part of the adult pathway and youths linked through Combined Counties football.

That gives the club a broad adult structure for players who come through local youth football. A young player can see a senior target inside the same club, while adult teams keep the Edenderry identity active beyond school age football.

Schoolboy, schoolgirl and academy football

The schoolboy section began in 1983 with under 12 and under 15 teams. That decision changed the club’s direction, creating a steady stream of young local players moving from age group football into senior football.

The club now describes over 600 players in 2025 across all levels, from the academy through to the first team. The Sunday morning games for younger children and the underage teams make the club a football home for families as well as adult players.

Milestones and recent team standards

Edenderry Town’s under 12 team won an All Ireland Community Games title in Mosney in 1989 and reached national finals again in 1990. The club has also maintained a long award record across first team, second team, youth team and personality categories.

Recent senior age pathway strength is visible through the under 19 group, which won the CCFL under 19 Premier League in 2026. Together with summer camp activity and multiple adult teams, that shows a club still active across development, competition and community football.

Membership and practical contacts

The current membership picture includes adult non player, schoolgirl, schoolboys and youth, senior male player, senior ladies player and junior academy options. Family package reductions and instalment options are part of the membership route.

The general club contact is the secretary email, and the current named contacts include Finbarr O Callaghan as secretary and Seamus Kane as chairperson. A first message should be routed through those contacts before a player attends a session.

Welfare, safety and inclusion

The club policies put strong emphasis on fun, participation, fair play, safe practice, equal opportunity and respect for players, parents, coaches, referees and volunteers. The mission is to promote soccer in a positive environment for Edenderry and the surrounding areas.

The welfare guidance covers parent conduct, player conduct, coach practice, safety checks, first aid, fair play, child welfare, equal opportunities, social media and volunteer recruitment. For a family, this matters because a large club needs clear standards as much as teams and pitches.

First enquiry checklist

A first message to Edenderry Town should include the player name, year of birth, home area, football background and whether the enquiry is for academy, schoolboy, schoolgirl, youth, senior football, ladies football, membership, volunteering, camp activity or welfare.

Before attending, confirm the team, coach contact, pitch location, footwear, arrival time, membership step and whether the meeting point is Paddy Maloney Park, Fr Paul Park or another agreed venue. That check is especially important for a club with multiple adult, youth and underage groups.
