Kanturk AFC identity
Kanturk AFC is a North Cork amateur soccer club founded in 1945. The club badge carries Kanturk Castle, two footballs, green and white colours and an EST. 1945 ribbon, connecting the football identity directly with the town.
The club serves players from Kanturk and Duhallow, with senior men, youth teams, schoolboy teams, schoolgirl teams and non competition younger age groups all connected to the same Gurteenard base.
Gurteenard home base
Gurteenard is the main football base for Kanturk AFC. The address is Gurteenard, Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland, P51 N9DF, giving visiting families a precise North Cork destination.
The ground supports senior football, youth league football, schoolboy games and schoolgirl football. Families should still confirm the pitch, meeting point, surface and arrival time before travelling because several age groups can be active on the same weekend.

From 1945 to Gurteenard
Kanturk football dates back to 1945, just after the end of the war. Early players travelled across Cork for games, and the club affiliated to Cork AUL in 1949 as its structure developed.
Home games were played around Kanturk before Gurteenard became the club’s permanent football base. Earlier locations included the golf club, rugby club, Tech field, Collins on Newmarket Road and the Banteer Road field.
Castle crest and local heritage
The club crest was shaped by a 1990 design competition won by Siobhan Duggan from Kilbrin. Kanturk Castle sits at the centre of the badge, so the crest tells the local story as well as the football one.
That matters for young players because the badge is not just a team mark. It carries the town landmark, the 1945 foundation date and the green and white colours seen across the club pathway.
Development of Gurteenard
In 2005 the club moved to purchase Gurteenard from Cork County Council, using a club lotto to support the field. That decision gave Kanturk AFC a permanent centre for training, games and community football.
Major fundraising for Gurteenard development followed in later years, helped by a Roy Keane question and answer event and sports capital work. The result is a club home that supports far more than one adult team.
Senior football pathway
Kanturk senior men are part of the Beamish Stout Munster Senior League Division 2 setting. Recent senior activity includes home matches at Gurteenard and away fixtures across Cork.
The senior story also includes major AUL milestones. Kanturk won AUL Division 1 in 2015, then completed an unbeaten 2019 season when Johnny Lynch led the side to the AUL Premier League by winning the Premier A title.
Schoolboys and youth football
Kanturk has a broad boys pathway from non competition U8 to U11 football through competitive schoolboy teams at several older ages. Recent club activity includes U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U17 football.
A standout youth milestone came in 2017 when Kanturk’s U15 team won the Neil Welch Founders Cup and a league title. Several players from that group later moved into the senior side, giving the pathway a clear local example.
Girls and ladies football
Kanturk affiliated with Cork Women and Schoolgirls Soccer League football for the 2021 to 2022 season and has built a girls pathway since then. The club has had more than 80 underage girls registered and has worked toward a women’s team.
Recent girls activity includes U12, U14 and U16 football, with Gurteenard used for home games and trips to other Cork venues. That gives girls in the Kanturk area a route into regular football without leaving the wider club setting.
Large underage membership
The club has had more than 300 underage boys involved, alongside the growing girls section. Competition teams across age groups, second teams and younger non competition football make Kanturk AFC one of the deeper community football operations in North Cork.
For parents, that scale matters because players can often find an age group, development level and social fit without changing club. It also means communication and exact session details are important on busy weekends.
Contacts and first visit
The main club email is kanturkafcsecretary@gmail.com. Named roles include registrar, secretary, public relations officer, child protection officer and chairperson, giving families several practical routes depending on the enquiry.
Players should bring shin guards, water, weather gear and the footwear requested by the coach. Families should confirm whether the session is senior, youth, schoolboys, schoolgirls, ladies or younger non competition football.
Best first message to Kanturk AFC
A useful first message should say whether the enquiry is about a child joining, girls football, schoolboys football, youth football, senior men, ladies football, coaching, volunteering, membership or match travel.
Include the player age, school year, football experience, nearest area and preferred contact details. If travelling for a game, ask for the exact Gurteenard pitch, footwear, parking guidance, arrival time and contact person.
