Straffan · County Kildare · Founded 1978
Village football beside the Liffey
Straffan AFC provides a route from first sessions to adult football at Lodge Park.
The story
A Straffan club since 1978
The club’s official profile dates its foundation to 1978. A published history of Straffan records that the early side played at Whitechurch, reached a Counties Cup semi-final in 1979 and entered the Dublin section of the Leinster Junior League in 1981.
That account credits Straffan with its first league title in 1981/82. The modern club now connects those adult roots with academy and schoolboy football, while the Saint Brigid’s cross on the crest gives the village team a distinctive local identity.
A provincial run
Six wins on the way to a Leinster final
In 2019 Straffan reached the Leinster FA Junior Shield final after defeating Gorey Rangers, Ballinahown, Derry Rovers, Kildare Town, Iveagh Celtic and Schreen Tara. Mid Sutton Sportslink won the final 1–0 with an 86th minute goal at the MDL Grounds.
The run remains one of the clearest documented senior milestones in the club’s recent history. Straffan returned to a cup final in October 2024, when the senior side met Newbridge Hotspurs in the Casey Division 2 Cup final at Doctor’s Road.
