Kiltullagh, County Galway
Castlepark football
Kiltullagh Pioneers FC carries a 1979 village story into Castlepark, with academy, boys’, girls’, women’s and adult football on the Galway FA pathway.
The Pioneers identity
Kiltullagh Pioneers FC is the soccer club for Kiltullagh, near Athenry in County Galway. The same local football identity also appears as Kiltullagh Pioneers AFC on FAI and Clubforce channels.
This is not the historic Dublin Pioneers name or a GAA identity. Its anchors are Kiltullagh, Castlepark, Galway football and the blue-and-white crest with the castle, Castle Park wording and 1979 date.
How the club started
The club began in August 1979 when local people around Kiltullagh Sports Centre moved to bring soccer into the community. Stan Lawless proposed the Pioneers name at the first meeting, and the new side entered the Galway FA league for 1979-80.
Kiltullagh’s first official match was at West Park in Galway City on Sunday 16 September 1979. Castlepark was not ready for league football that season, so West Park belongs to the club’s early story rather than its current match-day base.
Castlepark and the main ground
Castlepark is the club’s football home in Kiltullagh. Galway FA fixtures name Kiltullagh as a match venue, while Clubforce places the club at Castlepark Kiltullagh, Athenry.
By the time of the FAI Club Mark award, the ground had a full-length grass pitch, dressing rooms and a 9-a-side pitch. Visiting teams should still follow the venue named on the fixture, because some matches use the Astro label.
Kiltullagh Astro
Galway FA fixtures also use Kiltullagh Astro as a venue label, and the club site carries an Astro area for payments. Treat that as a distinct current football location when a fixture names it.
The Astro role is important for midweek and winter football: it gives the club a floodlit all-weather option alongside the grass pitch at Castlepark.
Academy, boys and youth football
The pathway starts young. Kiltullagh’s club teams include U6, U8, U10 and U11 groups, then boys’ teams through U12, U13, U14, U15 and U16 age bands.
Galway FA fixtures in 2026 add U18 and U21 football for Kiltullagh, so the route does not stop at small-sided football. Families can use the club site, Galway FA fixtures and Clubforce channels to see the live entry point for the season.
Girls and women’s football
Girls’ football is part of the club pathway, with U12, U14 and U16 girls named on the club teams page and 2026 Galway FA fixtures showing girls’ competitions from U12 through U16.
Adult women’s football is also active in Galway FA competition, and local community notices in 2026 connect ladies social football with Castlepark. For training details or joining, the club’s own channels are the place to check.
FAI Club Mark and volunteers
Kiltullagh Pioneers AFC received the FAI Club Mark Entry Level award in December 2021. The award sits beside a wider club story of coaches, committee members and volunteers turning a rural soccer idea into a multi-team club.
The official site also carries child welfare and player-development downloads. Parents with safeguarding, membership or coaching questions should use the club’s official channels rather than relying on third-party listings.
Joining and contact
The club’s website is the main starting point for news, history, teams and pitch information. Clubforce carries membership, forms and club policies, while the Facebook page is the clearest public social channel.
Use Castlepark/Kiltullagh from the fixture listing and confirm the exact pitch before travelling, especially when a match is assigned to the Astro.
