Football at Gortakeegan
Girls, boys and senior football keep United part of sporting life in Monaghan.
United through the years
Monaghan United dates from 1979, with its blue and yellow identity familiar to generations of football followers in the town. The club played League of Ireland football from 1983 to 2012, bringing national competition to Monaghan through years in the First Division and Premier Division.
Among the senior side’s notable finishes were second place in the First Division in 2000/01 and a League Cup final appearance in 2010. United finished as runners up in that cup. The club left the League of Ireland in June 2012, during its final Premier Division season.
Football continued after that departure. Today’s United combines underage football in Cavan and Monaghan with a senior side in the North East Football League. Gortakeegan remains the link between that national league history and the players who use the ground now.
Girls, boys and more time on the ball
United’s younger players are part of the Cavan Monaghan underage football community. Boys have represented the club in SFAI cup football, including the under 12 Ulster competition in 2021. Girls’ teams also form part of the club’s current football activity.
During the 2025/26 indoor season, United was among the clubs involved in the local futsal programme. The smaller playing area gives children repeated chances to receive the ball, choose a pass and take on an opponent. Club and CMUL committee member Martin McCormilla spoke in April 2026 about giving children more opportunities to play through autumn and winter.
For families, the first step is an enquiry about the right age group. Ask about the current outdoor and indoor arrangements for that team, including where its sessions take place.
Senior football in the North East
United’s men compete in NEFL Division 2 in 2026. Their league football brings opponents from across the north east, with Monaghan, Cavan, Louth and Meath clubs sharing the wider NEFL competition.
For an adult player looking to join, contact United about the senior squad and its current training arrangements. The NEFL club contacts offer a direct starting point. Match venues and kick off times should be confirmed with the team before travelling.
Visiting Gortakeegan
Gortakeegan is United’s football home on the south western side of Monaghan town. Use the Monaghan United ground pin for a visit, then check the meeting point with the coach or match organiser.
The ground also has a place in schools football beyond the club’s own teams. Monaghan United was selected as the venue for the Ulster finals of the 2025 FAI Schools Primary 5s programme, bringing school teams from the province to Gortakeegan.

Making the first enquiry
Parents can ask United to put them in touch with the appropriate girls’ or boys’ team. Include the player’s age, the football they have played so far and the group they hope to join. Ask about spaces, registration, training and the club’s current child welfare contact before attending.
Senior players and visiting teams can use the club contacts supplied through the NEFL. Arrange the details directly with United so the right person can answer questions about the next session or match.
