Founding group and first season
The club began on 11 February 1971 as Mungret Soccer Club. Pat Cotter was chairman, Paddy Casey secretary and John Kennedy treasurer, with Jimmy McCarthy, Frankie Casey, Thomas Casey, Gordon Reidy, Joseph Casey, Michael Cotter, Peter Quinn and John Hehir on the committee.
The first fundraising included hops in the village hall and a church gate collection. The first junior captain was Tom Quinn, and the opening home pitch was the Cement Field.
From the Cement Field to the current ground
In 1972, the County Council gave the club use of the pitch it still uses today. The club also had use of the area now used by the neighbouring GAA club.
In 1982, the club purchased the plot where the clubhouse stands. The clubhouse opened in 1984 and has since been redeveloped into a modern facility.
Membership and team scale
The club has operated with more than 400 registered players and over 30 teams across schoolboys, schoolgirls and junior football. Recent growth has lifted the scale further, with more than 550 members and almost 50 teams expected for the season that followed the new astroturf opening.
The expanded team list also includes a newly formed over-40s side, showing that the club now supports participation from early childhood through veteran adult football.
Junior, ladies and youth teams
The men’s junior structure includes A, B, C and D teams, plus under-18 and under-17 teams. The ladies pathway includes a junior ladies team, under-19 girls and under-17 girls.
The current team menu also shows boys and girls squads across under-16, under-15, under-14, under-13, under-12 and under-11 groups, with U7 to U10 teams forming the youngest section.
Nursery and school age football
The Mungret Regional soccer nursery began during the 1990s. The club built a pathway from under-6 to under-10 non competitive football, then under-11 to under-16 schoolboys and schoolgirls football.
That structure gives children a gradual route into organised games before they move into older youth, junior and ladies teams.
All weather training and new astroturf
In 1997, the club converted ground behind the clubhouse into an all weather training area. The work raised ground levels, laid a fine dust surface, and added high netting and floodlights.
The more recent modern astroturf facility adds another milestone in the club’s facility development and supports underage challenge competitions, regular training and broader team growth.
FAI Club Mark and standards
Mungret Regional FC has held FAI Club Mark status, reflecting club development, structures and standards. The wider football operation includes organised teams, fixtures, documents, membership systems and committee roles.
For families, that means the club presents clear points of contact, safeguarding material, membership options and a defined route into the correct age group.
Major honours from 1988 to 1997
The club’s strongest early run came between 1988 and 1998. Honours from that period include the 1988 Premier League title, 1992 Munster Youths Cup runner up finish, 1994 Munster Junior Cup win, 1996 FAI Junior Cup runner up finish and 1997 Munster Junior Cup runner up finish.
Youth, junior and ladies honours
The youth teams won Division 2 league titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Later honours included the 2007 Junior C Division 4A Cup, 2009 Division 1A league, 2009 U17B league, 2010 Ladies Munster Junior Cup and 2011 Junior B Division 2B Cup.
The club was Aviva Club of the Month in January 2014, followed by 2017 Youths Division 1 Cup success and 2017 U17B league and cup success.
Recent honours and girls pathway

Those girls and ladies honours sit alongside the current U17 girls, U19 girls and junior ladies structure, giving the female pathway its own visible milestones.
International caps and professional pathway
Former players Alan Burke, Colm Barrett and Tom O’Connell earned junior international caps. Former ladies player Grannie Cross earned international recognition.
Former underage players who moved into professional football include Garbhan Coughlan, Ronan Coughlan, Sam Warde, Yousef Mahdy, William Fitzgerald and Jack Lynch.
2026 underage tournament growth
The club’s newer underage programme includes challenge competitions for young players. An inaugural under-9 tournament was planned with 16 teams, including visiting clubs such as Bohemians, Salthill Devon and St Michael’s.
The main trophy was named in honour of Bernard Doyle, a founding member of the Mungret underage section.
