Early 1970s football at Tubber

From 1970-71, Murroe had a Junior Youth team and a Junior B team in the Limerick District League. Willie O’Rourke and Patsy O’Rourke helped run the early football operation.

The first Tubber home was rent free land from Denis Richardson, across from the current location. Players changed at Garrett Hayes’ house or in an old egg store owned by Leonard Hartigan because there were no dressing rooms or running water.

Early honours and young players

The Junior B team won multiple league titles in the early years and kept progressing through the divisions. The youth team also won multiple Division Two titles, with many young players moving into Junior B football at 14 and 15.

The 1973-74 season was a major high point. Junior B won Division 3A, while the youth team won Division Two, the Kennedy Cup and the Taylor Cup.

Murroe and Annacotty tournament link

A Murroe and Annacotty tournament became part of the area’s football calendar before the Ballynanty Rovers seven a side event. Tom Harty ran the tournament and Reynolds Hotel sponsored it.

Limerick city clubs took part and St Michael’s of Tipperary won the inaugural competition, giving Murroe football an early connection with strong clubs from outside the village.

Pause, restart and the Boher base

The Junior B team folded in 1976-77 when player numbers fell, and the youth team folded by 1978 when mentors were no longer available. The club then went through a six year pause.

In 1984, Joe Bradley, John O’Mahony, Michael Walsh and Aidan McMahon restarted a Junior B team in the Limerick District League. The Garrison in Boher became the home base and the first season was a survival test.

Late 1980s and early 1990s progress

Murroe’s restarted Junior B side won the Division 4B Cup, then followed with a Division 4B league and cup double. The team later added Division 4A success before winning Division 3A in 1992.

The club also formed an under-12 schoolboy team in 1986, and that team reached the Kennedy Park Cup final two years later.

Return to Tubber and Limerick schoolboys football

Murroe returned to Tubber in 1990-91 and started under-10 and under-12 teams. In 1992, the club joined the Limerick Schoolboys League and all underage teams moved to Tubber.

The junior side continued its climb with promotion into Division 2B, then won the Division 2B league and cup double in 1993-94.

Buying land and building pitches

The club purchased 6.5 acres at Tubber in 1999-2000 and developed a full size pitch in 2001. A further 4.5 acres were bought in 2004, giving Murroe AFC a stronger base for a growing football community.

By 2009, the clubhouse was complete, three pitches were fenced, and a training area was ready for floodlights.

2011 dressing room development

The next phase of dressing room development began on 11 January 2011 and was unveiled by President of Ireland Mary McAleese. Materials from the PJ McManus Pro Am, Sports Capital funding and volunteer labour all helped move the project forward.

That work strengthened the Tubber base for training nights, match days and the expanding underage and adult sections.

2006-07 league and cup doubles

The 2006-07 season brought a double success for Murroe’s adult teams. The A team and B team both won league and cup doubles in the same season.

Those adult achievements sit alongside the club’s longer pattern of youth titles, junior promotions and facility building.

2020-21 team structure

The 2020-21 season included 22 competitive teams from under-10 to under-18 boys and under-10 to under-18 girls, plus two junior teams and a junior ladies team.

That structure gives Murroe a broad local route for boys and girls to remain in football through teenage years and into adult teams.

Girls and ladies pathway

Murroe AFC supports schoolgirls football from underage groups through older youth football and into junior ladies football. Girls from under-10 to under-18 age bands have been part of the competitive team structure.

The pathway gives families a clear route from first team involvement to older girls’ football, with the junior ladies side providing an adult destination within the club.

FAI Club Mark and club standards

Murroe AFC holds One Star FAI Club Mark recognition. The club combines a large volunteer structure with organised facilities, defibrillator access, dressing rooms, lights and astroturf provision.

Those elements matter for families because they show a club with defined roles, training capacity and match day facilities across a large membership.

Community role and player experience

The club provides a safe, friendly and enriching environment for children and adults from Murroe, Boher and nearby areas. Its scale gives players a chance to train, compete, volunteer, coach and stay connected locally.

The motto Ad Astra per Aspera fits the club’s story: early hardship, a pause, a restart, land purchase, facility development and a broad modern pathway.

Gear, membership and first enquiry

Murroe AFC club gear is available through O’Neills. A first enquiry should include the player’s age, school year, football background, preferred team route and whether the request is for boys, girls, youth, junior men or junior ladies football.

Email info@murroeafc.com or phone 086 850 9672 for the current training group, registration steps, pitch details and match day guidance.

Club history

Murroe AFC was formed in 1968, developed through early Tubber football, restarted from Boher in 1984, returned to Tubber in 1990-91 and built a modern home through land purchase, pitch work and dressing room development.
