Club history

Newport Town AFC was founded in May 1970 and entered its first competitive match in the Clare League that August. Its first trophy was the Clare Shield in 1973. The club joined the Limerick District League in 1975 and won Division 2 in 1979. Schoolboy football began in 1985, with the under 12 team taking a league and shield double in 1988. In 1997 the schoolboy teams moved into the Limerick District Schoolboy League. The club moved to Derryleigh Park in August 2007 after 37 years at its earlier ground. Two sand based pitches were followed by an artificial pitch in 2009. A clubhouse with four dressing rooms, a meeting room, club shop and public toilets opened in 2017. Red and black with white trim are the club colours. Its crest depicts the bridge and rivers at Newport, with the first club badge adopted during the 1998/99 season.
