Newtown United was formed on 10 May 1978 after informal matches between Newtown and Heronstown led to interest in a local club. It entered the Louth and District League for the 1978–1979 season.
The first league match, against Albion Rovers on 1 October 1978, finished 2–2. The club initially wore yellow and blue before switching to black; its published history identifies red with black trim as the later colours.
The crest, designed in 1984, depicts the original Bawn Road pitch through the eye of a bridge. The club bought its Woodtown site in 2002 and developed a full size pitch, training pitch and clubrooms.
