Red and black football at Frank Taaffe Park

Rossin Rovers AFC connects a 1984 local beginning with Frank Taaffe Park, senior honours and a growing football pathway for children and adults.

Football from Rossin to Frank Taaffe Park

Rossin Rovers AFC is a County Meath club founded in 1984 after local players enjoyed a beach football tournament at Laytown. The club now brings children and adults together at Frank Taaffe Park.

Red and black stripes define the home identity, while the anniversary crest carries the 1984 foundation year and 2024 celebration.

The first game in 1984

Founders Noel Walsh and Frank Taaffe gathered local players and entered the league after seeking advice from Gerry Gorman. Rossin Rovers’ first competitive match was a 4 to 4 draw away to Archers on 26 August 1984, with Walsh in goal.

Paddy Halpin provided the first pitch in a field, which volunteers marked out with lawnmowers. The club stayed there until 1999, moved to Mellifont and later returned to Rossin.

A community ground built over time

Rossin Rovers’ ground journey reflects steady local work. The club began on a field, moved between Rossin and Mellifont and eventually developed the home now known as Frank Taaffe Park.

The park name recognises Frank Taaffe’s work for the club. It gives current teams a stable setting for training, football and community activity.

Fitzsimons Cup winners

Rossin Rovers won the Fitzsimons Cup in the 2004 to 2005 season. The club’s league record also includes Fair Play League awards in 1985 to 1986 and 1999 to 2000.

A Division 3 runners up finish in 2008 to 2009 adds another marker to the senior story. These honours sit alongside the club’s long volunteer tradition.

Football for children and adults

Rossin Rovers has an academy, adult men’s football and adult women’s football. The club also introduced its first girls underage team at under 8 level, widening the early route into football.

Families should ask which age groups are active now, where they train and whether places are available before attending a first session.

Current under 12 pathway

The 2026 to 2027 North Eastern Regional League records Rossin Rovers under 12 boys teams in several youth divisions. The records show a live boys pathway connected with the club.

Because age group places and teams can change during a season, a new player should use year of birth and preferred training area when contacting the club.

The red and black kit

Rossin Rovers’ home kit uses red and black striped shirts, black shorts and red socks. The alternate shirt uses red and white stripes.

The anniversary crest adds a red wreath around the shield, with 1984 inside and 2024 beneath it. Away teams should agree colours before travelling.

Frank Taaffe Park recognition

Frank Taaffe Park was named during the FAI Festival of Football in 2019. Brendan Reid was also honoured that day, recognising the people whose work helped the club develop.

The ground name keeps that volunteer history visible for today’s teams and families using the park.

The award reflects the work behind the pathway, from coaching and safeguarding to keeping sessions organised and welcoming.

Volunteers behind the Rovers

Rossin Rovers grew through local effort: a first pitch marked with lawnmowers, a long ground journey, academy football, adult teams and a new girls pathway. Volunteers remain central to coaching, welfare, fundraising and match day work.

Someone wanting to help can begin with one clear role, from coaching and grounds support to committee work, fundraising or helping a young team settle in.
