Onagh Park

Onagh Park is the club’s football home. The ground was officially opened in August 1984 and became a major part of the Skyvalley story.

The wider site has been described as roughly five acres in the centre of the parish, with two pitches, training and astro turf facilities, plus a clubhouse with four dressing rooms.

Started in 1971

Informal football at the start of the 1970s led to organised friendly games early in 1971. Skyvalley then became part of the new Roscommon football league story.

Club member Sean Kelly was elected vice chairman at the inaugural league meeting, showing how closely the club was tied to the foundation of organised local soccer in the county.

Founder member tradition

The Skyvalley first team was a founder member of the Roscommon league and has long been associated with top flight football in that setting.

The opening competitive years included a first away win against Mosaics of Roscommon and early home football at Keogh’s field before the club developed the Onagh Park home.

From field games to a permanent base

The move from early friendly games and Keogh’s field to Onagh Park gives the club story a clear arc. Skyvalley started with organised local football, then built the physical base that allowed the club to last.

That shift matters for parents and players because it explains why the club is rooted in Taughmaconnell. The ground, the crest and the parish identity all point to the same local football home.

First owned ground

Skyvalley became the first club in the league to own its own ground. That point is central to the club’s long term role because it changed what the club could build for players and families.

Ownership gave the club space to develop pitches, training areas, clubhouse facilities and a stronger base for future teams.

Facilities and access

Onagh Park has been described with two pitches, training space, astro turf facilities and a clubhouse with four dressing rooms.

For families and visiting teams, that means Skyvalley is more than a single pitch. It is a developed rural football site with room for training, matches and player support.

Championship years

Skyvalley won a first league title after the 1976–77 season, added the League Cup the following season and lifted further titles during the 1980s.

The mid and late 1980s brought a strong run, with league titles in 1985–86, the following season and 1988–89, followed by further Roscommon Cup success as the decade closed.

Cup tradition

The Roscommon Cup became a repeated part of the club story, with the cup coming to Taughmaconnell several more times before the millennium.

That cup tradition gives the club history beyond one strong team. It shows sustained competitiveness across changing squads and seasons.

Community care for the ground

Recent public funding lists Skyvalley Rovers Football Club in Taughmaconnell for an energy retrofit and Solar PV project valued at €43,672.96.

That work fits the wider Onagh Park story: a club that bought a ground, developed it and continues to improve the facilities for long term community football.

Youth and family football

Skyvalley has fielded teams in several age groups across its history. That matters in a rural setting because the club gives children and teenagers a local football route beside the adult game.

The Taughmaconnell identity on the crest helps younger players see that their team is tied to place as well as competition.

Match visit notes

Visitors should use Onagh Park, Taughmaconnell as the travel anchor and confirm the correct pitch, arrival time and dressing room arrangements with the coach before travelling.

Players should bring boots, shin guards, water, warm layers and wet weather gear. Where astro turf is in use, check footwear requirements before leaving home.

Joining and contact

New player enquiries should include the player’s year of birth, school year, football experience and the group being requested.

Families can help the club through coaching, supervision, pitch care, fundraising, grant work, transport, communications, kit, clubhouse jobs and match day support.
