Limerick city and surrounds
Local football, shared ambition
Club football and representative opportunities for boys and girls across Limerick city and its surrounding communities.
The association
A league for the city and its neighbours
The Limerick District Schoolchildren League, known as the LDSL, serves schoolboy and schoolgirl football in Limerick city and the surrounding area. Its work connects local club football with opportunities for players and coaches to develop beyond their own teams.
Limerick has several distinct football organisations. Limerick District, Limerick County and Limerick Desmond should be identified separately when choosing a team, following a competition or contacting an organiser. The LDSL’s own website uses the name Limerick District Schoolchildren League.
Player development
Enjoying the game and learning together
The LDSL sets out a player-centred approach: enjoyment, sportsmanship, respect and a positive environment sit alongside football development. Its stated aims include supporting coaches, offering more challenging training and helping players progress across different levels of the game.
That approach gives families a useful starting point when speaking to a club. Ask about the right age group, the training venue and the support available to a new player. Club football is the place to establish regular participation; representative football is a separate part of the league’s programme.
Girls’ representative football
Gaynor Cup champions in 2025
The LDSL under-14 girls won the 2025 Gaynor Cup at the University of Limerick, defeating DDSL 1–0 in the final on 6 June. A late penalty settled the final and brought the trophy to Limerick District.
Their route included a quarter-final win over Waterford and a semi-final against Roscommon decided on penalties. The achievement belongs to the league’s representative squad, whose players came together from local clubs; it is separate from the honours won by those clubs in their own competitions.
Boys’ representative football
A Kennedy Plate final at home in Limerick
The LDSL under-14 boys also reached a national tournament final in June 2025. After winning their three Kennedy Cup group matches, they drew with Limerick Desmond in the cup quarter-final and went out on penalties.
They then beat Galway in the plate semi-final before losing 3–2 to Waterford after extra time in the Kennedy Plate final. The tournament gave the squad a week of representative football at the University of Limerick, alongside the club football that brought the players into the league’s pathway.
Families and club volunteers
Choosing the right contact
Contact the club first about joining, registration and weekly training. For league notices and competition information, use the LDSL’s official website and check the named age group and competition before travelling.
The league has a dedicated child-welfare page with safeguarding documents dated March 2025 and a published welfare contact route. Use that page for welfare enquiries rather than a general fixture discussion. Club volunteers can also use the official site to find the league’s notices and administrative information.
