The association
Football rooted in Mayo
The Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL organises underage association football in County Mayo, with a remit extending to under-18 level. Its league and cup competitions bring local clubs into a shared county structure, while its representative sides take Mayo into inter-league football.
The organisation is affiliated to the Connacht Football Association, the Schoolboys/Girls Football Association of Ireland and the Football Association of Ireland. Its role is distinct from an individual club: players train and play with their clubs, within the competitions organised for their age group.
Club football
A place for each age group
Boys’ and girls’ football have their own divisions in Mayo’s competition programme. Age groups and divisions help families follow the right team, particularly when a club enters several squads.
For a child starting football, contact the local club about its age groups, registration and training arrangements. Ask about the session location as well as the time: the venue for training may differ from the ground used for a particular match.
Before travelling, check the team, competition, date and named venue. A club name alone may refer to more than one squad.
Representing the county
Mayo girls on the national stage
Mayo’s representative teams bring players together beyond their club sides. The under-15 girls won the 2024 SFAI Inter-League Cup, recovering from two goals down to beat Galway 3–2 in the final.
That followed an under-16 girls’ Inter-League Cup success in 2023, with Sinéad Mulhern managing both winning teams. These were honours for Mayo’s representative squads, alongside the separate achievements of the county’s clubs.
Coaching and refereeing
More ways to take part
In August 2026, the Game Changers pilot was announced by the Mayo Football League and Mayo College of Further Education and Training, with support from Mayo Schoolboys/Girls, the FAI, Mayo Women’s League and Mayo Referees.
The programme links coaching and referee education with practical opportunities in local football. Its planned activities include safeguarding, first aid and experience with clubs and suitable youth fixtures. It offers a route into the game for students interested in helping football happen as well as playing it.
Parents and club volunteers
The right person for your enquiry
Start with the club for player registration, training arrangements and team enquiries. For association enquiries, use the Mayo Youth Soccer contact form and include the club, age group and competition where relevant.
The FAI’s parent information includes welfare resources and the route for reporting a safeguarding concern. Use the dedicated safeguarding route for concerns rather than a general football enquiry.
