Football across the north east
Local clubs, regional ambition
A youth football community connecting coaching leagues, club competitions and representative opportunities for girls and boys.
The association
Roots in Meath, reach across the region
North Eastern Regional League traces its roots to the Meath Schoolboys League, formed in 1984, and the wider NECSL structure established in 1991. Growth beyond Meath helped shape a regional youth league serving clubs across county boundaries.
The academy’s history identifies Meath, Westmeath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan within its club community. The league’s earlier development included coaching football for younger children and the launch of girls’ age-group football in 2011/12. Those foundations remain part of the story behind today’s boys’ and girls’ competitions.
Learning the game
From coaching leagues to academy football
NERL’s coaching-league resources emphasise small-sided football, giving younger players more involvement, decisions and opportunities with the ball. Its website separates Meath and Louth coaching fixtures and provides format information for clubs and coaches.
The academy describes boys’ and girls’ groups from under-10 pre-academy through an under-11 development year to under-12, under-13 and under-14 representative football. Volunteers deliver the programme alongside the players’ club football. Families should speak with their club about the relevant route and check the academy’s current notices before attending a session.
Representative achievement
Kennedy Cup finalists in 2026
NERL reached the Kennedy Cup final in June 2026, its second appearance in the decider in three years. Galway won the final 1–0 at the University of Limerick, with NERL finishing runners-up after a strong week of interleague football.
The route included a 2–1 quarter-final victory over Kildare and a penalty-shootout win against Cork in the semi-final. The academy also records a runners-up finish in 2024. These are achievements of the league’s selected representative squads, drawn from players at its member clubs.
