Westport United FC
Adult, youth, academy and Football For All football since 1911
Westport United FC is one of the oldest association football clubs in Mayo and Connacht. Formed in 1911, the club fields football from its Portwest Academy through school age, youth, under 21 and adult levels. Its home is AbbVie United Park in Westport.
Origins and identity
The official club history traces Westport United to 1911 and records an early link with Bohemian FC. Frank Gill, from the Quays area of Westport, was involved with both clubs. That friendship is given as the reason Westport adopted red and black.
The club first competed in a town league and entered the IFA Junior Cup. The arrival of the Connacht Junior Cup in 1928 brought a wider set of opponents. Club records also discuss the Westport Town name used in older sources, and they flag uncertainty around which Westport side should be credited with some Connacht Junior Cup wins from the 1940s. This page keeps that historical note intact.
Westport Town was a founder member of the Mayo Association Football League in 1954. Westport United then became one of its strongest clubs, winning seven league titles in eight seasons between 1962 and 1970. The club also competed in the Connacht Senior League and remains connected to Mayo league football.
National success and honours
Westport came to national prominence by winning the 2004 to 2005 FAI Junior Cup and then entering the 2005 FAI Cup. The official roll records one FAI Junior Cup, 21 Mayo Association Football League titles through 2017, one Western League or Connacht Senior League title, one Connacht Senior Cup, seven Connacht Junior Cups and one Michael Byrne Cup.
- FAI Junior Cup winner: 2004 to 2005
- Mayo Association Football League winner: 21 listed titles
- Western League or Connacht Senior League winner: 1973 to 1974
- Connacht Senior Cup winner: 2008 to 2009
- Connacht Junior Cup winner: seven listed titles
- Michael Byrne Cup winner: 1986 to 1987
The full seasons and runner up records are published on the official Westport United roll of honour. That club page is the reference for older competition naming and disputed early records.
Teams and pathway
The club’s 2026 membership structure shows the breadth of the pathway. The Portwest Academy covers children born from 2017 to 2020. Schoolboys and schoolgirls cover birth years from 2010 to 2016, followed by boys under 17 and under 18, girls under 17 and under 19, boys and girls under 21, junior men, junior women and masters women.
Current membership options also include Football For All and adult non playing membership. Birth year groupings, fees and open places can change, so the live membership page and club news should be checked before registration.
IYF has connected Westport youth team cards and competition links below this profile. Those records come from live competition data and do not replace the club’s own registration list or team contact instructions.
Football For All and autism friendly work
Westport United has named Football For All coordinators and received Autism Friendly Champion accreditation after training delivered with AsIAm and Westport Autism Friendly town. The club describes Football For All as a promise that every child is welcome. Families can ask the club which session, support and arrival routine fits the player.
Grounds and facilities
The older Sports Park opened in 1953 and remained in football use as the club expanded. Development of a new site on the grounds of Westport House began in 2013. United Park opened on 25 September 2016 after support that included a €200,000 government grant.
The opening layout included a running track and concrete spectator terrace. The ground later gained floodlights, with the club marking its first Mayo Super League match under lights in February 2025. The present sponsored name is AbbVie United Park.
The official contact address is United Park, Westport, County Mayo, F28 VY73. The linked venue profile carries a Google map. Visitors should confirm the entrance, kick off time and any parking or accessibility needs with the team before travel.
